Charlton celebrates their 21st anniversary in style with the founders David Nelson and David Foot being our VIP
Twenty one years ago back in 1997 David Nelson and David Foot formed a football club as part of Bexley Deaf Club's lottery funding for sports.
The football was only meant to be casual and last the length of the grant. But 21 years later the club has grown from strength to strength.
The club now comprises of the First Team, Veterans, Reserves, U16 and U12 teams. This makes Charlton the UK's biggest deaf football club.
Remark! Community has had a long standing relationship with the club with things like our annual joint summer tournament and joint Christmas Party.
We also manage and facilitate their youth football team with our qualified youth workers and coaches.
To mark the occasion we had a testimonial match for David Nelson at the Valley Stadium. The prestigious event was sponsored and funded by Remark! Community. The Valley is where Charlton Athletic professional club play. This was a double celebration for David's 60th birthday. The first team played against the Legends. Many former players dusted off their football boots and held in their beer bellies and turned out for the big game. After a close first half the first team led 2-1. In the second half the age and weary legs started to come into play and the First Team beat the Legends 6-2. But the biggest cheer of the night was when David came off the bench and dribbled past 3 players and scored for the legends! What a feat at 60 years old!
This new season Charlton are building on the 21 years of success and will be entering our first team in BOTH the National Deaf League and South London Alliance local league. The Veterans will play in the Southern Deaf League while the reserves play in Kent Disability League and Disability cups. We are also delighted to announce Charlton has been selected as the host for Deaf Champions League in 2019.
